Motherhood

On 22nd of March 2015 I entered the wonderful world of motherhood!

William Spencer was born Sunday night at 10.25pm weighing 4.130kg and 52cm long. William is now 6.5 weeks old, and I can’t imagine life without him!

I wanted a baby so much that throughout my pregnancy I kept thinking that it’s too good to be true and I kept expecting something to go wrong! At the same time I feared that I may not cope with motherhood, or that I won’t like my baby.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. It seems so silly to me now  to think that I feared that I wouldn’t like him! I was blessed with a healthy baby boy and the love I feel for him is like nothing I have experienced before. At times it still feels surreal and I can’t believe that I am a mother!

To my surprise, motherhood came naturally to me and any fears I had are now a thing of the past. I am enjoying every moment with him and I feel like my life is now complete.

Living with Kangaroos

When I first came to Australia, I had this vision that there would be kangaroos hopping around the streets and that I could have one as a pet. Needless to say that I was very disappointed to find out that was not the case. Living in the suburbs of Melbourne, there were no kangaroos hopping around, nor could I have one as a pet. About the only place I could see a kangaroo was at the zoo.
In 2013, my husband and I moved to Healesville, as this is where he grew up and I was happy to get away from the suburbs. Healesville is technically still a suburb of Melbourne, but it is about 60km away from the CBD and is surrounded by wineries and cow/sheep pastures. As such, it has a small town feel to it, and I love it! What I did not realise when I moved to this lovely town was that my dream would come true!
Yes, soon after moving in we realised that we were getting regular visitors. Kangaroos! I could not believe it! I would look out and see about 4-5 kangaroos hopping past my window. Or even better, see them grazing about 5 meters from the window. I don’t get to touch them and if they spot me they will more often than not hop away (depending on how close to the house they are) but I thoroughly enjoy watching them.
I am so grateful! I love animals and it is lovely being surrounded by Australian wildlife. We have also spotted Echidnas, Kookaburras, Rosellas, King Parrots, Cockatoos, Possums and other wild animals.

Here are some pictures of the Kangaroos I have spotted around the house.

Learning to sew

I just finished making this teddy. I feel so proud! I’m still learning to sew and my technique needs perfecting, but I think this is pretty good as my first sewn teddy. I used a combination of machine and hand sewing plus a bit of crochet for the eyes. I also hand stitched his mouth and nose on white felt. What shall I name him?

Some Finished Knitting Projects

My two main hobbies are knitting and gardening.

I like to garden on the weekends when it is sunny, and I knit basically whenever I find time. In the car, while watching TV, etc. In fact I feel like I am wasting time if I sit in the car or in front of the TV without knitting. I knit almost exclusively baby wear. I do not have the patience to knit myself a sweater for example.

I also have a shop on Etsy (which I have neglected for a few months now) where I sell some of my knits. I have put it on “holiday” mode before going to Europe in July, and only recently switched off the holiday mode. I will be working to stock it up however it will take a while, as I also have a full time job.

I thought I would show you some of my most recently completed knits. Some of these projects I had started a while ago and in the last month I decided to go through my unfinished projects and complete some of them. These are not going to my shop though.

1. Not a great picture, but this is a baby vest, made of 8 ply merino wool. I think it will look better on a baby than it does in this picture.

2. Baby nappy cover for summer days, made of soft 4ply acrylic baby yarn. I do not really like knitting with Acrylic, however I have purchased the yarn in the past and I am trying to use it up.

3. Baby sweater made of 8 ply cotton/acrylic blend yarn. I love this one. The picture makes the colour look more gray that it is in real life. The colour is actually called “Natural”.

4. Baby pants made of 8ply 100% organic cotton. I have knitted these months ago, but only this last month I have sewn them and finished them.

5. Two baby bonnets. One is pale yellow (not quite as pale as this picture depicts it), and the other one is white. Both knitted in 4 ply soft baby acrylic yarn. I love the pretty design along the front of the white one.

6. Baby sweater, made of merino/cashmere blend 8ply yarn. It is very soft on a baby’s skin, hence why I love working with soft merino/cashmere blend yarns.

7. Baby summer romper. The second picture is a bit blurry, but they are the only two pictures I took of it. This one is made of 4ply 100% merino wool. This yarn is not as soft as the merino/cashmere blend, but it is still soft enough for a baby’s skin.

My love for animals

I have always loved animals. My favorite toys were always stuffed animals. I remember when I was really young maybe 5 or 6, I used to sleep on the edge of my bed because all my stuffed animals took up the rest of the bed. And I couldn’t bear sleeping with just one or two at a time. It had to be all of them!

Growing up in Romania, there were always stray cats and dogs and I felt so sorry for them! I remember walking to school in second or third grade and there was a dog on our street that used to walk with me all the way to school. And then sometimes after school I would find him somewhere on my way back home and he would walk home with me. Needless to say that I always gave him my sandwich! And if he wasn’t there one day, I would give my sandwich to another stray. I remember sneaking bread out of the house so I could give it to the strays.

We always had dogs growing up but my family always ended up giving them away for some reason or another. It made me sad and I looked forward to the day I would have my own pets and I swore I would rather be homeless than give my pets away.

Fast forward to April 2009. I was now living in Australia (since 2005). I was living in a small unit with my sister and 3 other girls. The rest of my family was back in Romania.

I had recently returned from a visit to Romania where I fell in love with a stray little kitten who lived at the front of my grandma’s apartment building. She had been hit by a car and as a result something was wrong with her hip. She was destined to a painful and most likely short life, especially considering it was winter and snowing. But then a nice lady from the apartment building raised money with the other neighbors’ help, and the kitten had a successful operation. I was ecstatic! This kitten was saved from almost certain death and suffering and was going to have a chance at a normal life.

A few hours after seeing the kitten fast asleep post surgery, it all came crashing down! The kitten died due to hypothermia. I couldn’t believe it! The nice lady had it in her home near a heater, but because it was so cold outside the kitten got hypothermia while the lady walked home with her from the vet. I cried for two days. I took small comfort in knowing that she was in a nice warm place in her last moments. Soon enough, I made the decision that I was going to rescue a cat from the shelter as soon as I returned back to Australia.

So, as I was saying, April. Early April. It was my housemate Monik’s birthday the night before and we were all hungover. Since returning from Romania, I had asked her if I could get a cat but the answer was always “NO, it’s not practical” ( as there were 5 of us living in a 2 bedroom unit). This morning everyone was hungover, maybe still a little drunk even, so I took advantage of the situation. I casually said: ” Hey, let’s go have a look at kittens at the shelter. We don’t have to get one, we can just have a look”. To my surprise, they all agreed and the five of us set off… A few hours later, we returned home with TWO KITTENS!

They were both 9 weeks old. One was mine, his name was Jasper. He was named by his foster family and I decided to keep his name. He was the cutest little ball of grey fluff. The other kitten was one of my other housemates’ and she was named Cleo.

Even though we have since all moved out, I still have Jasper and my friend still has Cleo. They are both 5 years old now, living separate but happy lives.

I was going to tell you all about how I got all of my pets but since this has turned into a somewhat lengthy post, I will leave it at that for now.

Here are some pictures of Jasper and Cleo. Enjoy!

Here I am

I have decided to blog mainly because I want to keep track of my thoughts and ideas.

I also hope that it will force me to commit. For example if I blog about wanting to volunteer at an animal shelter (which I want to do) it will then force me to go and do it.Or at least inquire about it.

In turn, I feel like blogging will lead me to live a more fulfilling life.

This thinking may not make sense to some and I may be wrong but I will give it a try.

So here I am!
